Since the mid-1950s, Surfside Beach has remained a top destination for vacationers and primary homeowners.  Surfside was once a working plantation known for its sweet potatoes.  Only a few miles long, Surfside Beach became popular when the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base was put back on active duty in the mid 50's.
